Purpose
In an effort to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the surgical workforce, the Central Surgical Association (CSA) is establishing a travel scholarship for surgeons from historically and intentionally excluded populations in the United States and Canada. The goal of this scholarship is to increase participation and access to the educational content and networking opportunities provided by the CSA and the CSA Annual Meeting.
Successful candidates will be surgical faculty in the United States or Canada within the first 15 years of practice. In addition to attending the CSA Annual Meeting, the scholarship recipient will also serve on the CSA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee for one year. Candidates with an interest in increasing DEI efforts at their home institution can leverage their participation in the CSA DEI committee toward those efforts. At the conclusion of the scholarship, the recipient will submit a brief written report to the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, which will include a summary description of their experience
Scholarship Details
The successful recipient will receive:
- Complimentary registration to attend the CSA Annual Meeting in 2023; and
- Reimbursement of up to $1,500 to support travel, lodging, and meals to attend the CSA Annual Meeting in 2023. Additional support for family members will not be provided. Following completion of travel, the awardee must provide a summary of expenses including original receipts.
- Faculty within the first 15 years of practice.
- Individuals meeting any of the criteria for historically and intentionally excluded populations by the
- National Institutes of Health: Individuals who identify as Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander; or by the
- Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada: Individuals who identify as women, Indigenous Peoples, members of racialized minorities, people with disabilities and LGBTQ2+ individuals.
Scholarship Application Process
To be eligible for consideration, the following materials must be submitted with an online application, which include:
- A copy of your curriculum vitae.
- A short essay describing how the opportunities from this scholarship will support your long-term career goals. (2-3 paragraphs)
- A letter of from recommendation from your Department Chair, section chief or an individual of equivalent rank. Your sponsor does not have to be a CSA member. (1 page)
Applications for the CSA Travel Scholarship for Historically and Intentionally Excluded Populations in the United States and Canada will be reviewed by the CSA DEI Committee. The successful applicant will be introduced during the CSA Annual Meeting.
